Holocaust Memorial Day in Leeds

PtJA will take part in the Leeds Town Hall civic remembrance event.

Dr Stephen Muir will lead a group of singers from the Clothworkers Consort of Leeds in a performance of “Mogen Avos” (Shield of our Fathers) by Joseph Gottbeter of Rostov-on-Don (c.1915). Dr Muir found the manuscript of the piece in Cape Town, South Africa, among the papers of Cantor Froim Spektor, who had been an acquaintance of Gottbeter in Rostov-on-Don. Very little of Gottbeter's music was thought to have survived the Second World War until this collection came to light earlier in 2015. This will therefore be the first performance of this music for around 100 years.
