The Music of Jewish Prayer: Unearthing Layers of Liturgical Chant and Song

Eliyahu Schleifer, Professor of Sacred Music and Director of the School of Sacred Music at HUC-JIR/Jerusalem will give a public lecture exploring the components that make up the traditional music of the synagogue. He will encourage his audience to see these as a ‘terrain’ with archaeological layers which interact and influence each other – including Psalmody, Cantillation of Scripture, Nusach, Chants and Melodies for Poetry, “Tunes from Sinai” (in the Ashkenazi worship) and Cantorial Improvisations.

‘One Little Goat': new discoveries in Jewish choral music

As part of the international conference ‘Magnified and Sanctified: The Music of Jewish Worship‘, The Clothworkers Consort of Leeds performs a programme of Jewish choral music, including works recently discovered as part of the AHRC-funded research project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive‘. Featuring soloists Mimi Sheffer and Beth Mackay.
Delegates booked for the 'Magnified and Sanctified' conference do not need to book or reserve a ticket for the concert.

Tour of Jewish heritage and Victorian Leeds 
On Wednesday 17 June, 4.00 – 6.30pm, Joy Mitchell-Kardesz (Leeds resident and Blue Badge Guide for Yorkshire) will lead a walking tour of Leeds city centre. Delegates will have the opportunity to see and learn about a great deal of Victorian and Edwardian Architecture as well as visiting some of the more modern buildings Leeds has to offer, such as the Trinity development and The Light.
The tour is for conference delegates only.
